4six: A Bench Redefining Furniture Design

beslerberti GbR's Innovative Approach to Modular Furniture

4six, a bench designed by beslerberti GbR, is a testament to the power of innovation and sustainable design. This award-winning piece of furniture is not only functional but also a symbol of responsible production methods and environmental consciousness.

The inspiration behind 4six is rooted in the belief that the world is full of products, but there is a need for innovative designs that add value. This philosophy led beslerberti GbR to create a product that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly. The bench is designed to act in diverse contexts, enriching the living culture in both private and public spaces.

What sets 4six apart is its modular origins. The bench can be configured to its needs, from a small rest bench in the living room to long benches for public spaces. This flexibility is a testament to the designers' commitment to creating solutions that respond to economic needs while remaining environmentally conscious.

The bench is realized through a combination of milled multiplex legs with a colored melamine coat and seat panels made of bent aluminum. The use of these materials creates a moment of tension between the natural and painted surfaces, adding to the bench's unique aesthetic. Furthermore, the production process is designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with the paint used in the powder coating being water-based and nearly all of it being recuperated.

The design of 4six is a result of extensive research and development. The initial concept was developed for a traveling exhibition by Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. Despite budget constraints, beslerberti GbR decided to finance the project themselves to meet their own quality and execution standards. The bench was then further refined through a university project and three prototype series with local companies.

The bench was exhibited at the IMM - International Furniture Fair in Cologne in spring 2016, where it caught the attention of SMV Sitz- & Objektmöbel GmbH, a family-run company that produces locally and sustainably in Germany. This partnership led to the bench's market launch at the Orgatec trade fair in Cologne in October 2016. Since then, 4six has won various awards, including the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, and new projects with the manufacturer are planned for the future.

In conclusion, 4six is more than just a bench. It is a symbol of beslerberti GbR's commitment to innovation, sustainable design, and responsible production methods. It is a testament to the power of design to not only meet functional needs but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
